I painted this piece en plein air at Lakeshore Park in Knoxville, Tennessee. I always enjoy painting from the Overlook at the park, because to really get the composition I want of the water and the hills I have to edit out a lot of the landscape that lies in my field of vision in between where I stand and the water. I zoom way in with my eyes so to speak, so it helps in my mind to imagine myself taking in the water view as from a boat, or a bird out over the water and ignore much of what is in the foreground. I like this approach because it also means I edit out lots of the nit—picky detail and just focus on large shapes and shifts in color. All the docks that dot the waters edge and the outlier trees are absorbed by the landscape around them and its freeing to paint that way! That feeling of looseness and freedom to represent the “gist” of things comes through in the piece I think, and it could be any beautiful morning on the water, surrounded by wooded hills.
